PRP stands for the skin rejuvenation technique, already known through Mesotherapy, that has now been extended to a new medical technique which uses the patient’s own blood (hence the name “Vampire Face Lift”) to produce plasma (fluid without the red cells), enriched with platelets, containing factors for tissue repair. For even more hydration you can add a hyaluronic acid to the injected fluid.
Regularly we are confronted with the suggestion that PRP has something to do with stem cell therapy or tissue transplantation. This is absolutely incorrect and leads to a lot of uncertainty and confusion.
The use of PRP has already been proven for decades to be very effective in orthopaedic healing (tendon injuries) and wound healing in (plastic) surgery. Recently it was introduced in aesthetic medicine.

For the Netherlands your doctor is the official trainer of Bo-Medical (the Dutch representative) and introduces these techniques to other medical professionals.

Technique for PRP

First your doctor will take one or more blood samples from one of the veins in your arm or hand. It is collected in special tubes and through a centrifuging process the platelets with the stimulating and regenerating factors become available in a 10-fold concentration.

They are immediately ready for re-injecting in or beneath the patients skin, from very superficial (“classic-PRP, 1 max. 6cc tube”, mesotherapy-like) to deep (“extra-PRP, 2 tubes”). On the spot it accelerates the natural healing processes by stimulating fibroblasts that form collagen, enhancing revascularisation and repairing defects.

For optimal results, we recommend 3 sessions spread over 2 months followed by a maintenance program of at least one or two sessions yearly.
To promote hair growth, it is advisable to arrange 6 sessions with an interval of 2-3 weeks, with a maintenance program of 1-2 sessions per half year.

Advice:

To reduce the pain of the injections take 2 paracetamol tablets of 500mg  1,5 – 2 hours before the treatment.

Results of PRP

The effect of the platelets’ growth factor and regenerating characteristics provides a gradual increase in skin thickness and vitality. By this rejuvenating result your skin gets a healthier, more radiant appearance and the signs of fatigue around the eyes will become less visible. The first initial effects will be visible after 4 – 6 weeks.

Like fillers the effect depends on the speed and vitality of your metabolism and the localisation of the injections but will last in average between 9 and 12 months after the initial period.

Where to use?

You are a good candidate for PRP Skin Rejuvenation if you want improvement of the:

  • Wrinkles on the forehead
  • Fine wrinkles around the eyes
  • Bags and dark shades under the eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Wrinkles on the lips
  • Acne marks
  • Wrinkles on the neck
  • Crinkling skin on chest or décolletage
  • Loose, saggy skin
  • Hair loss (alopecia) on your head

When not to use?

Contraindications of the PRP are the same as with every wrinkle treatment (see here), but are absolute in these cases:

  • platelet dysfunction,
  • thrombocytopenia,
  • hypofibrinogenaemie,
  • hemodynamicinstability,
  • acute and chronic infections,
  • chronic liver disorders,
  • skin diseases or skin cancer,
  • severe metabolic or systemic disease and
  • prior treatments with permanent fillers.

A relative contraindication exists in the following circumstances:

  • Very deep wrinkles will not disappear completely with PRP treatment
  • A diminished effect of the PRP is expected from alcohol and tobacco addiction
  • There is a possibility that severe scarring does not respond to the PRP treatment
  • There is a possibility that hair loss does not respond to the PRP treatment

Finally:

You should discuss any questions you may have during your initial visit and together with your doctor you can decide what treatment is best for your concerns.
You can choose for one of the following indications

- Mesotherapy
- Correction of wrinkles
- Preventing baldness (alopecia)

Because the product for the treatment is derived from your own blood, platelet-rich-plasma skin rejuvenation (PRP rejuvenation) is completely hypoallergenic, non-toxic and never can be contaminated with infectious components from other persons, thus leaving little to no risk of side effects.

Every cosmetic treatment has a very small risk of an infection or a small bleeding (blue spot) because of the treatment itself.
In the rare case of a superimposed infection you will be treated adequately with an antibiotic.
